摘  要:目前對于慣性的定義一般以牛頓第一定律給出，而事實上人們對慣性的認識各有各的看法，從某種意義上來講，牛頓第一定律給出的慣性的定義及其意義是模糊的，是有待于完善的。由牛頓第一定律給出的慣性是有其局限性的，故此，我們以其為出發點來理解客觀世界的物理現象也是有局限的。而對慣性的進一步認識有利于我們對客觀物理世界的本質性理解。為了集思廣益，從多個角度來討論慣性問題，是接近慣性本質的重要途徑。就慣性的本質而言，本文涉及到慣性與能量、慣性大小的量度以及慣性的存在性性質；就慣性的起源而言，涉及到慣性的電磁起源和相對論起源。本文通過對慣性本質和起源的討論，對慣性有了更加深刻的理解。慣性不是物體所具有的性質，它與物體的個別特征無關，慣性只是存在的一個性質，是被研究對象周圍的環境在此對象上的表現，也就是說它是存在于物體周圍的一種條件，一種約束。物體的慣性是時間均勻性與空間對稱性的必然結果。關于慣性的起源問題，在本文中所涉及的電磁起源和相對論起源都有各自的理由，電磁起源并沒有成功找到慣性的起源，而相對論起源是席艾瑪等人為慣性找到的一個宇宙學起源，已經得到一定程度的認可，是本文就慣性的起源問題所支持的觀點。
